Local History of Hamm
In 1226 the Earl Adolf von der Mark founded Hamm an shortly afterwards awarded it freedom of the city. The inhabitants came vom Nienbruegge, a nearby town that had recently been destroyed.
The name of the city has its origin in the ancient field-name "Ham" meaning "angle". It was in the angle formed by the two rivers Lippe and Ahse that Hamm was founded in 1226.
Hamm developed rapidly as it was awarded the rights of own coin as well as own measures, and because it had an execellent, strategic and geo grahical location in the junction of old trade routes at the Lippe crossing. Hamm became the residence of the Earls of Mark. Being the principal among the Mark towns ist became a member of the Hanseatic League between 1469 and 1651.
The Napoleonic period brought quaterings, contributions and the incorporation into the Grand Duchy Berg. After having got ride of the French rule, Hamm was annexed to the administration district of Arnsberg in the newly formed province of Westphalia. The transfer of the Superior Provincial Court from Kleve to Hamm in 1820 was of great importance for the town.
The contruction of the Cologne-Minden railway was the beginning of Hamm as an industrial town.
On the 1st of April 1901 it left the county and became administrative district in its own right.
